Then I want to show you where this is getting to. The process is called agentic AI. That means AI has agency. They are not just a reactive summary of information, which is the AI most of us are coming into contact with. Those are large language AI that help us with our Google searches and other kinds of searches. Agentic AI actually is allowed to reason, think through, make decisions, and act on things. So there’s a whole field emerging now to do that. I’m going to give you a little example. This is a demo of somebody trying to sell this, who knows whether it was real time or just, but it’s to give you an example of what’s coming in the engagement of patients. Tom Lumeris, I think is the company, and you’re going to hear a minute here of Tom having a conversation with a patient.

“Hi, I’m calling from General Hospital. Is this Catherine Stewart? Yes, this is Catherine. Great, it’s Tom again, the AI care team member at Dr. Foster’s office calling on a recorded line. Dr. Foster asked me to reach out to you because you may be overdue for a breast cancer screening.

Is now a good time to talk for a couple minutes? Sure, no problem. Have you had a breast cancer screening in the past two years? Actually, no, I haven’t. No problem. I can help you get that scheduled. Would you like me to transfer you over to scheduling or text you a link so you can schedule it online? You can send me a link. That would be fine. Okay, I’ve sent that link to your phone. Do you have anything else I could help you with? No, I’m good. Thanks. Great. Well, the care team at General Hospital is here to support your health. I wish you all the best and stay well.

Goodbye. . . . Hi, I’m calling from General Hospital. . . .”

Okay. So, were you guys able to hear that?

Yes. We appreciate your introduction and you are dealing at the front end of AI, which will go much farther and much faster than you anticipate.

I agree. So, part of my statement around that is there’s a natural sense of threat around this of loss of employment. Is this going to take an MA’s job away? When do they start taking my job away? I want to encourage us to try to see if we can find a high-stakes challenge zone. For those who remember my talk on when we get into the threat mindset, we go into fear and we get reactive, which I think is warranted. But at the same time, if we get into high-stakes challenge, then our full cognitive capacity and social engagement and oxytocin-derived thinking happens. And it’d be fun to hear both the threat aspects and the opportunities that you guys see in both primary care behavioral health integration and in the use of AI in primary care.

So, let me ask. As a psychologist, the question I would have is not a referral. I’d say, why haven’t you got the breast exam? We need to get into what was their hesitation. So, I was thinking with regard to agency that this Tom would have said, okay, well, why can we talk a bit about why you haven’t got that breast exam?

I think Tom, the male voice was the AI; however, I think they were both AI. And I think that’s the funny take home is that both those were AI. I challenge you to ask the guy who showed you that, because that was not a human answering an AI. That was two AIs having a conversation.
