Service is something important throughout our entire life, no matter how old or how young it may be. And now, consistent with the theme, how to be a servant, how to be a servant who leads, i.e., a servant leader. You can identify with the limited physical being and know that we can grow to know consciousness-based activity. This is a part of mastery.

Mastery means you’re never done because you never really achieve it. I think that’s part of the point we want to make. Mastery is a journey that requires calm self-reflection and knowing ourselves as we do it. My purpose concerns the integration of my personal life with my professional life, I’ve spent most of my life over-focused on my professional life and under-focused on my personal life. So one of my growth edges has been how to be the same person regardless of where I am. And that’s when I began to realize that my sense of purpose and core purpose comes from guiding and coaching people to form and join teams so that they can overcome challenges and achieve what seemed impossible by themselves. And so even that is an element of this grouping as an example of looking for multi-perspective sources and teamwork wherever I go.

What came to my mind is finding voice. As some of you know, one of my close colleagues is sitting here in this digital room, that’s Gay Terman. And we had students, mature men and women from all over the world, getting their doctorates in psychology with us. It was very powerful for them to find their own voice and I was honored to facilitate that. And coming down to today, one of the things I’m thoroughly enjoying is putting together our Salus volumes. I’ve written a lot of books by myself. I’ve written a lot of books with other people. But for me to sit here and look at the work that each of you has presented over time and to hear your voices is a source of great gratification for me. It is the wisdoms that you folks have provided. This is another stage for me from being a teacher, and being president of a graduate school. This new stage relates to the whole notion of being taught by my colleagues here in this group. So, this is a purpose that has been sustained, but also refined in many ways.

As many of you know, I was raised in a Presbyterian church. My father was a preacher. And so, there was always this sense of service. And so, the concept of servant leadership has always been sort of part of that. But I think the purpose, as I was listening to Walt, thinking about this. It goes along with what the two of you have already said, but it’s essentially to create opportunities for others to thrive. And essentially, because I have been given those opportunities to thrive, I feel like I’m thriving. I want to make sure others, and that could be my family. Jeremy, I really appreciated what you said about pulling the profession and the personal life together. And that includes spouse, family, but also residents and colleagues and staff.

This has been a fabulous start to this discussion. And I will confess that my wife still will tell me I am more evolved at work than at home, but I am making progress just now. So, it’s an important process.
